What Is a Brokerage Account?
A brokerage account is a storage facility for securities. Before brokerage accounts were digitalised, brokerage accounts were still physical depositories where shares were stored as documents. A brokerage account used to be something like a special safe deposit box for shares. Nowadays, the FXFlat brokerage account fulfills exactly this function.
How Does a Brokerage Account Work?
Once you have completed the opening of your brokerage account, you will receive the access data to your new brokerage account. Your securities are stored in the digital brokerage account and are assigned to you alone. The ownership of your securities is always documented in the brokerage account and you have real-time access to your shares, ETFs and other securities for your trading activities in the account management and the trading platform.
At central depositories, the ownership is documented and processed after the purchase/sale on an exchange. In Germany, for example, this is done by Clearstream AG in Frankfurt as the central securities depository.

Anyone who wants to open a brokerage account does not usually have to take anything special into account. Anyone who is at least 18 years old can open a brokerage account. To deposit capital into the brokerage account, a current account at a bank is necessary and, if applicable, a smartphone for 2-factor authentication.
There is no minimum deposit for opening a brokerage account.
Opening a brokerage account for private investors usually takes 1-3 days and depends on the type of brokerage account to be opened. Opening a corporate brokerage account usually takes a few days longer than opening a private investor's brokerage account.
Opening a brokerage account with FXFlat is possible from the age of majority - i.e. from the age of 18. A brokerage account can only be opened by a person of legal age. It is not possible to open a brokerage account on behalf of another person (e.g. their children).
The brokerage account is subject to statutory deposit protection. The securities and cash holdings are stored in so-called segregated accounts. This means that there is a strict separation between the broker and the brokerage account holder. Ownership is clearly defined at all times and is not commingled at any time.
Securities are part of the special assets and can be transferred to another bank or broker in the event of the broker's insolvency. The securities remain in your possession even then.
In most cases, a business deposit account can be opened for all common German and European corporate entities. Please note that the opening of a business brokerage account is always checked on a case-by-case basis and the submission of various notarised documents is necessary.
